Fundamentals of GC/MS

Introduction

  What Is Mass ?

A mass spectrometer is an instrument that measures the mass of microscopic particles such as molecules and atoms. We can identify a molecule and quantify the amount of target chemicals in mixtures from this information. Mass of natural materials and units of mass will be explained here.

  • Mass of Materials
  • Mass Number and Isotope
  • Isotopic Abundance of Carbon Atoms
  • Isotope Abundance Table
  • Molecular Weight

  Types of Ions

Ionization produces positively- and negatively-charged atoms, mplecules, or fragments called ions. An overview of a mass spectrum will be provided and various types of ions will be introduced.

  • Example of Mass Spectrum
  • Base Peak
  • Fragment Ion
  • Isotope Peak
